I took my first pole class at Aerial Dance in November, and through the winter struggled with pole grip. But then summer arrived, and I was so delighted to see how my skin suddenly clung to the pole in all the places I had hoped it would (and maybe some I didn’t)!
For pole dancers, summer heat isn’t just about sunburns and sweaty studios—it’s actually a secret ally. Warm, humid weather can seriously boost your grip on the pole, making it easier to stick, climb, and conquer some inverts.
Here’s why: Skin grip is essential in pole dancing, and a little bit of sweat (not too much!) helps activate that stickiness. In summer, your skin is naturally warmer and more hydrated, meaning less need for endless grip aids or frantic warm-ups. The pole itself also stays warmer, reducing that cold, slippery feel that makes winter training more challenging.
Of course, there’s a balance—too much sweat can turn you into a slip-and-slide. But for many of us, summer brings that sweet spot where skin grip is optimal, and moves feel smoother and more secure. So although it’s inviting to stay outside, it’s also a great time to head to practice and nail those gravity-defying tricks.
So if you’ve felt beaten down by the August sun, take heart. Summer might just be your skin’s best pole partner. Just don’t forget your water bottle (and maybe a towel or two!).
