On a recent trip to Tennessee, I went to one of Dolly Parton’s dinner theater shows. Yes, it totally had that Pigeon Forge cheesiness to it (think of Wisconsin Dells, but down South), but the performers do some really cool things on aerial silks. I found myself thinking “I bet Instructor Alison could do that!” Honestly, I have enjoyed both students and instructors doing amazing silks performances during the Annual Show and Student Showcase.

I started thinking about other shows that tell stories, specifically using aerial silks. Of course, the first troupe I thought of was Cirque du Soleil. These shows specifically feature aerial silks:

• Kooza: This touring Big Top tent show highlights a solo aerial silks performance performed above the center ring. (This show is in Australia at least through 2026).
• OVO: This insect-themed arena show traditionally includes a beautiful aerial silks act performed by a “butterfly” that represents the grace of flight. (This show is overseas at least through February 2027). 
• Drawn to Life: Cirque du Soleil’s resident show in Orlando at Disney Springs has featured a stunning aerial silks act intertwined with an animation theme. (This one stays put in Florida!).
• LUZIA: This surreal, Mexico-inspired show famously includes a breathtaking, high-flying aerial performance on straps and silks above a cascading waterfall. (This show is currently in Pennsylvania, on tour in the US and Canada).

And while I haven’t seen this particular show, I heard that Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol show (coming to Appleton in November) also includes aerial silks! 

While these shows may not always be convenient to see, they’re certainly fun to check out when they come through the area or you’re on vacation. Who knows? You may even get some inspiration for your next Aerial Dance Student Showcase performance!
